Attack on Istanbul courthouse results in one fatality

A deadly attack ensues at a courthouse in Istanbul resulting in one death and another two shot dead—the Turkish authorities quickly point fingers at an infamous leftist group.

In a gruesome terror attack, a courthouse in Istanbul weathered a violent shootout resulting in one fatality, whilst two attackers succumbed to their wounds. Turkish officials have labeled the incident as a blatant act of terrorism.

The incident, which took place on Tuesday, resulted in six people being critically injured, among which were three law enforcement officers. Despite the timely medical intervention, one of the wounded individuals succumbed to their injuries, as confirmed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The identity and background of the deceased were kept undisclosed.

The roots of this aggressive action are somewhat obscure, as no group has claimed responsibility so far. However, the Turkish authorities have promptly designated the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front (DHKP-C) as the planner and executor of the gruesome act. This leftist group has been known for carrying out such radical actions in the past.

Turkey’s interior minister, Ali Yerlikaya, made it clear that the suspects involved in the shooting were killed in an intense gun battle that ensued when they attacked a checkpoint near the courthouse. He identified them as EY and PB, with only coded identities disclosed due to security protocol. However, Yerlikaya pointed out that both were associated with the DHKP-C, a militia condemned as a “terrorist group” within Turkey.

Established in the early 1980s, the DHKP-C continues to be one of the most ardent threats to the Turkish governance and law-keeping forces, pushing them into a spree of violence and disruption.

Police quickly secured the scene, ensuring heavy presence near the court’s entrance, with additional enforcement to monitor the entrance and exit points, as footage from ambulatory resources confirmed. Additionally, the corridors of the courts were closed for further investigation.

Whilst the investigation was promptly launched, as stated by Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc, the Turkish officials vowed to fortify the fight against such radical elements and their promoters. To quote president Erdogan, “The Republic of Turkey will continue to fight against all terrorist organisations and those who support them.”

Escalating Unrest

The attack comes amid a palpable atmosphere of anxiety and volatility that has engulfed Turkey, as the ripples of the Gaza war continue to resonate across the Middle East. This has been one among many such occurrences of violence that the nation has been subjected to recently.

A recent case involved masked attackers believed to be a part of ISIL (ISIS) swarming a church in Istanbul during a crowded Sunday Mass, taking one life in the process. Several arrests have been made since then, as authorities dug out connections to the militant group.

In a similar vein, The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), another armed group known for its longstanding battle against the Turkish government, claimed responsibility for a suicide attack conducted at the Ministry of Interior in Ankara, in October. In return, Turkey lashed out by bombing Kurdish spots in Northern Iraq, and increasing the detainment of individuals with alleged connections to Kurdish factions.

Despite the escalating unrest and the hardships faced by the citizens, the government stands firm in its endeavor to weed out insurgency and bring back collective peace to Turkey.
