Sri Lanka to reduce military strength due to economic crisis

Sri Lanka announced that it will cut the number of troops until 2024 by cutting defense spending due to the worst economic crisis it has faced.

In a written statement, Deputy Defense Minister Premitha Bandara Thennakoon stated that they plan to reduce the current number of soldiers from 200,000 783 to 135,000 by 2024. In the statement, it was noted that the main goal is to create a technically and tactically sound and well-balanced defense force by 2030. While Sri Lanka’s total foreign debt exceeded $51 billion, it defaulted on nearly $7 billion in debt that was due last year. Faced with the most severe economic crisis in its history, Sri Lanka reached a preliminary loan agreement of $ 2.9 billion as a result of negotiations with the IMF.
