Total sales in the European Union (EU) automobile market decreased by 4.6 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year due to supply shortages. Top-selling brands were Volkswagen, Toyota and Peugeot.
The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) has announced the new car registration data of EU countries for 2022. Accordingly, the supply shortage negatively affected vehicle production in European countries throughout the year. The number of new car registrations in the EU decreased by 4.6 percent in 2022 compared to 2021 and fell to 9 million 255 thousand 930. Before the Covid-19 epidemic in EU countries, automobile sales, which exceeded 13 million in 2019, decreased to 9 million 939 thousand 418 in 2020 and 9 million 700 thousand 95 in 2021. The data revealed that the decrease in sales continued last year. While automobile sales among EU countries increased by 1.1 percent in Germany in 2022 compared to the previous year, they decreased by 7.8 percent in France, 9.7 percent in Italy and 5.4 percent in Spain.
MOST NEW CARS IN GERMANY Among the 27 EU member states, Germany had the highest number of new cars in 2022. During this period, 2 million 651 thousand 357 new cars were registered to traffic in Germany, 1 million 529 thousand 35 in France, 1 million 316 thousand 702 in Italy and 813 thousand 396 in Spain. On the other hand, new car sales in the EU increased by 12.8% in December compared to the same period of 2021, reaching 896 thousand 967. According to the manufacturers, VW Group sold the most new cars in the EU in 2022 with 2 million 321 thousand 30 units. Stellantis Group followed VW Group in new vehicles in EU. Stellantis Group, which includes brands such as Peugeot, Fiat, Citroen and Opel, sold a total of 1 million 823 thousand 725 cars. Renault Group, on the other hand, took the third place with 984 thousand 558 new cars. On the other hand, sales in 2022 decreased by 5.2 percent in VW, 14.1 percent in Stellantis and 4.3 percent in Renault compared to the previous year. TOP SELLING BRANDS
According to the brands of the groups, Volkswagen realized the highest sales in EU countries with 1 million 19 thousand 352 in 2022.
It is followed by Toyota with 635 thousand 553, Peugeot with 556 thousand 591, Renault with 541 thousand 493, Mercedes with 529 thousand 222, BMW with 503 thousand 781, Audi with 475 thousand 801, Skoda with 461 thousand 925, Dacia with 440 thousand 193. Kia followed with 429 thousand 483 and Hyundai with 420 thousand 97.
